Based on a true story the film is set in a small seaside town shortly after the end of the First War when residents begin to receive obscene and scandalous anonymous letters.

Deeply conservative Edith (Olivia Coleman) believes they are being sent by her rowdy and foul- mouthed neighbour Rose ( Jessie Buckley) who strongly denies it.

The letters prompt a national uproar and a trial ensues.

However, when the local women start doing their own investigations it is realised that Rose may not be the culprit after all.
