The Catholic nun, Francesca Cabrini, arrived in New York in 1889 to be greeted by disease, crime and impoverished children. She had been sent there by the Pope on a mission to raise money to build orphanages, housing and hospitals
for the destitute of the city.

Although she had to fight discrimination, hostility and sexism as well as cope with her own poor health, her determination and entrepreneurial skills resulted in transforming lives and bringing genuine good into the world.

She was canonised in 1946.
