Viva Wind Quintet

Christine Lorriman (Flute)
Christine is a well-respected flautist and teacher in the Lancashire/ Yorkshire area. In 1975 she was awarded a Lancashire County Scholarship to study with Patricia Morris and Atarah Ben-Tovim (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra).

She then continued her studies at Huddersfield School of Music with Alan Lockwood (BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra). On completion of her degree Christine was awarded a distinction and the Turner Prize for Orchestral Playing.

She is currently principal flute with the Haffner Orchestra, Promenade Concert Orchestra and Lakeland Sinfonia.

Since 2001 Christine has been a tutor on the annual international “Flute Kitchen” summer course in Harrogate.

Nigel Atkinson (Oboe)
Nigel is an Architect by profession, practising in Lancaster.

During his student days, he played for the Manchester University Orchestra. Nigel has played with orchestras in Cambridge, Reading, Maidenhead and Burford and is as busy with his Oboe playing, as he is with architecture.

He plays regularly in Lancaster, Kendal and with the Promenade Concert Orchestra, Morecambe, as well as with many local choral and instrumental groups.

Janet Barlow (Clarinet)
Janet started playing the clarinet at the age of 9 and was soon awarded a Liverpool Education Authority scholarship to study with Thomas Gilbert (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra) and also a place in the Liverpool Youth Orchestra.

She read music at Birmingham School of Music / Conservatoire studying with Angela Malsbury, principal clarinet of the London Mozart Players.

Janet lives in Lancaster and works as a freelance teacher. She is currently principal clarinet with Lakeland Sinfonia,
Haffner Orchestra and Promenade Concert Orchestra.

In her spare time Janet enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family.

Keith Sagar (Horn)
Keith was a late starter only starting the tenor horn aged 11.

Within a year he moved on to the French Horn and went on to study at Huddersfield School of Music followed by a postgraduate course at Trinity College London.

Following a year at Bretton Hall Teacher Training college, he started teaching in music services across the North-West of England in a variety of roles including instrumental teaching, teacher training and managerial roles.

Keith performs in orchestras across the North and is a
founder member of “The Old Brass Rivets” brass quintet.

Keith’s main hobbies are eating and drinking!

Jo Wood (Bassoon)
Jo read Music at Huddersfield Polytechnic, studying bassoon under David Chatwin, principal bassoon of the BBC Philharmonic, and Robin Kennard, then co-principal of the Hallé.

Jo worked as a freelance player with a number of orchestras including Orchestra da Camera, and the Bardi Symphony Orchestra, Leicester.

Jo, until recently, was a highly regarded woodwind teacher who worked for the Lancashire Music Service and visited schools in Cumbria.

She plays regularly with orchestras including the Haffner Orchestra, Promenade Concert Orchestra and Lakeland
Sinfonia.

In her spare time she enjoys hill walking and gardening.
