Set in late 19 th century France, Eugenie (Juliette Binoche) is the personal cook of Dodin, a wealthy gourmet who spends his time thinking about and eating top quality food.
He does not run a restaurant but provides, along with Eugenie, exquisite meals for his male friends.
They have worked together for 20 years and have become close but when Dodin asks Eugenie to marry him she refuses. They are equals in the kitchen and she does not want this to change.
In order to get her to change her mind he does the only thing he knows, and cooks for her.
