In a small crofting village in the Outer Hebrides Kirsty dreams of a better life away from the isolation and narrow-mindedness that suffocates her.
She sees hope and a future elsewhere with Murdo, a sensitive and intelligent boy from the village. But WW1 intervenes and Murdo and several others local lads are conscripted to the front.
A road dance is held in their honour the evening before they leave and the whole village attends. But the sense of community is soon shattered by a tragic incident that changes Kirsty’s life forever.
