Disillusioned teacher, Tom Mitchell (Steve Coogan) travels to a divided Argentina in the mid 1970s to teach English in a posh boys’ school at a time of great political instability following a coup.

On a trip to Uruguay, he comes across a beach where penguins are soaked in oil.

He rescues the only one still alive, and after feeding and cleaning it the bird refuse to leave Tom, following him everywhere.

He smuggles the penguin back into Argentina and into the school where it is a big hit with the boys and is allowed to swim in the school pool.
