In the summer of 2014 – the 75 th anniversary of the D-Day landings – 89-year-old Bernie Jordon (Michael Caine) made global headlines.

He appeared to stage a ‘great escape’ from his care home, where he lived with his wife Irene (Glenda Jackson) to join fellow war veterans on the beach in Normandy. It was
a story that captured the imagination of the world.

The bitter-sweet script explores the reality of what really happened with wit and generosity. It is a heartwarming film that manages to avoid straying into sentimentality.
