In this extraordinary film a young woman, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is brought back to life by a charismatic, but troubled, Victorian anatomist Dr Godwin Baxter (William Dafoe), who has retrieved her body from the mud of the Thames.

Bella is utterly naïve and barely verbal with no understanding of the world but soon she is hungry for knowledge.

She runs off with a slick and amoral lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) on a whirlwind sexual adventure across continents free from the prejudices of her time, eventually becoming the ultimate self-made woman.
