The film is set in 1981 when Britain was facing recession, unemployment and widespread racism. ‘The ‘Empire’ of the title is a (fictional) cinema on the Margate sea front and the set is a real cinema that had fallen into disrepair and was restored to its former magnificence.
It is a powerful and poignant story about human connections and the magic of cinema, and Olivia Coleman gives a marvellous performance as a troubled theatre manager who forms a bond with a much younger employer, the son of Caribbean immigrants.
“A wonderfully acted drama” – Peter Bradshaw.
Starring: Olivia Coleman, Michael Ward, Toby Jones & Colin Firth.
